Neighbourhood Watch is a partnership where people come together to make their communities safer. It involves the Police, Community Safety departments of local authorities, other voluntary organisations and, above all, individuals and families who want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and to reduce the fear of crime by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit.
If you would like to be part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area, contact the Watch Liaison Officer, Terry McCormick, at the NW Liaison Office, Margate Police Station (tel 01843 222214), who will give you further information or will put you in contact with the Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator of the established scheme, should one already exist where you live. If there is no scheme in existence the crime prevention officer will be able to advise you and assist you how to establish a scheme. Obviously, as the title suggests, Neighbourhood Watch relies on participation of the neighbours who live in area, whether this is a close, a road or a block flats.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH first appeared in Thanet around 1985, particularly in such areas as Cliftonville and Birchington, and was organised and administered by local residents. The THANET NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION was established in 1995 to provide an administrative and operational focus and to oversee rapid expansion throughout the Isle.
For administrative purposes the Neighbourhood Watch organisation in Thanet is divided into ten Zones, which together form the Thanet Neighbourhood Watch Association (TNWA), which in turn is a member of the Kent County Neighbourhood Watch Association (KCNWA). KCNWA is formed as a limited company with charitable status (Charity Number 1103915). TNWA now comprises more than 600 street coordinators covering 670 streets and, in all, 20,573 households out of a total of 56,802 (36 percent coverage).
The ten zones of TNWA cover the following towns or villages
Zone 1 - MARGATE
Zone 2 - CLIFTONVILLE
Zone 3 - KINGSGATE & ST. PETERS
Zone 4 - BROADSTAIRS
Zone 5 - DUMPTON, RAMSGATE (North)
Zone 6 - NEWINGTON
Zone 7 - RAMSGATE (South), PEGWELL
Zone 8 - WESTGATE, WESTBROOK, GARLINGE
Zone 9 - BIRCHINGTON
Zone 10 - THE RURAL VILLAGES (Minster in Thanet, Monkton, St. Nicholas, Sarre, Cliffsend, Manston and Acol)
Several of the above Zones have formed their own local NW Committee, organise local meetings and many publish their own periodic newsletter to their members. The TNWA Committee consists of two elected or nominated representatives from each of the 10 Zones, with additional honorary members from East Kent Police (Thanet District) and meets quarterly to discuss business of mutual interest and concern.
INTERNATIONAL AND OTHER LINKS
Thanet Neighbourhood Watch has been instrumental in assisting the development of neighbourhood watch on the COSTA BLANCA in Spain and has been directly twinned with the neighbourhood watch movement in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, Spain since 2002.
Similar assistance was provided in 2007 to the police in GUERNSEY in regard to the establishment of neighbourhood watch.
